A man, aged 53, is now facing a murder charge as he told Miami-Dade police that his father died from injuries sustained in a recent fall at their Fontainebleau home.
At around 12:49 a.m. on Saturday, authorities received a call about a man who was unresponsive. The incident took place at a residence located near Northwest Sixth Lane, which is situated just south of the Dolphin Expressway.
David Scott Buer, the victim’s son, guided first responders to the west bedroom, where they discovered 81-year-old Paul Buer lying motionless in his bed. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m.
When the police arrived at the scene, they observed multiple bruises on Paul Buer’s face, neck, torso, and arms, as well as minor lacerations on his arms, as stated in the arrest report.
Buer claimed that the injuries were caused by his father’s partial fall three days prior. According to authorities, he asserted that he had helped his father return to bed after the incident, explaining the injuries on the victim’s arms.
According to the police, David Buer’s explanation was called into question due to the physical evidence found at the scene.
The case took a crucial turn when the victim’s autopsy was performed by Nicholas Barna, an associate medical examiner for Miami-Dade County, according to authorities.
Barna stated that the victim’s injuries did not match David Buer’s explanation of a fall.
During the investigation, detectives questioned David Buer, who reiterated his account of the events. According to him, his father had fallen and accidentally hit a walker a few days prior to his death.
According to him, he and his father were the sole occupants of the house during that period.
David Buer’s injuries to his outer forearms and hands raised suspicions among investigators, adding to the intrigue of the case.
David Buer is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a first-degree murder charge. The charge is related to the aggravated abuse of an elderly victim, as indicated by jail records.
