According to the Florida Wildlife Commission, The Sunshine State has seen a surge in the number of Kemp-Ridley Sea turtle nests this year, breaking all previous records.
According to data from FWC Fish + Wildlife Research, Florida has confirmed a total of 22 Kemp-Ridley nests in 2024. This number is more than double the 10 nests reported in 2023, and 8 nests in 2022.
There was a rise in the number of Leatherback Sea turtle nests this year, with 1,737 nests found, as compared to 1,638 and 1,690 in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
In contrast, there was a notable decline in Green Sea turtle nests, with only 2,556 recorded in 2024, in contrast to the 24,378 and 7,346 nests reported in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
This year, Loggerhead Sea turtles have witnessed a decline in the number of nests, with only 67,856 nests being reported as compared to 92,547 in 2023 and 72,840 in 2022.
