An 88-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a fatal accident on Wednesday evening in Sunrise, Fla.
According to the Sunrise police, the woman accidentally drove her vehicle over a concrete parking block and ended up in the canal.
A surveillance video captured by a nearby apartment shows her car being carried away by the water.
A resident of the apartment complex bravely entered the water in an attempt to assist, but the car quickly became submerged.
“I tried my best, but I couldn’t do it. Although I came close, the windows were down, and the car ended up getting filled with water,” the kind-hearted person shared.
The woman who lived in the complex was recognized by her neighbors as a longstanding resident.
The woman’s 95-year-old husband is now being taken care of by a neighbor.
The woman spoke highly of her friend, describing her as strong-willed, single-minded, and incredibly stubborn. She emphasized that their friendship had lasted for an impressive 23 years.
As the man entered the canal to assist the woman, his daughter immediately called 911 while the 88-year-old desperately pleaded for assistance.
“I was actually a little angry with her. She probably shouldn’t have been driving,” expressed the victim’s neighbor.
According to witnesses, the car submerged and remained underwater for approximately 10 minutes until a dive team from Sunrise arrived and successfully rescued the woman. She was then immediately transported to Westside Regional Hospital for medical attention.
“I’m really going to miss her. Every week, she would bring me lemons for my iced tea,” shared the neighbor. “She was incredibly thoughtful and generous, and she is well-known by everyone in this community.”
Despite the efforts made by both good Samaritans and local officials, unfortunately, the woman could not be saved and she did not survive.
“I feel a deep sense of sadness because she reached out to us for assistance, and it pains me to think that she may have had the belief that we could rescue her,” expressed a witness solemnly.
