Commissioner David Suarez has emphasized the need to rezone the mixed-use areas in order to accommodate both businesses and residents, thereby addressing the issue of abandoned buildings in the area.

According to Suarez, in order to truly transform the atmosphere and environment of Washington Avenue, the key is to introduce residential properties.

A few years ago, Micah resided near Washington Avenue. According to him, the noise level in that area was simply unbearable.

“It was directly across from the club. I have never been on a street as loud as that one. If I had known it would be like that, I would never have chosen to live on that street,” he remarked.

Moving to a different area in town, he believes that an increase in the number of residents could potentially transform the overall atmosphere of the neighborhood.

According to him, when you have a sufficient number of people, you can accomplish anything.

Jill Walls, a resident of the local community, is actively involved in SOBE Safe, a group of dedicated volunteers working towards enhancing the overall well-being of the residents. According to Walls, there are specific areas within the neighborhood that become significantly darker and pose a safety concern for individuals walking alone. However, she believes that by increasing the number of residents in those areas, the situation can be improved.

“I currently feel safe in certain areas of Miami Beach while doing that, but there are other streets that need attention because I don’t feel as secure there,” expressed Walls.

According to Suarez, rezoning this area involves a specific process that includes public input and multiple meetings with the planning board and city commission.

A workshop is scheduled for Tuesday to gather public input on this matter.
