A fatal crash occurred in downtown Miami over the weekend, where a woman is now facing multiple felony charges and potentially more. According to the police, she walked away from the accident, which resulted in the death of two individuals and injuries to two others.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, bystanders were forced to apprehend the accused driver, Maecee Marie Lathers, 24, and bring her back to the scene on Saturday morning.
Lathers, a resident of Miami Gardens, was driving a white Mercedes sedan at a high speed on North Miami Avenue around 6:45 a.m. She ran a red light at Eighth Street and collided with a black Range Rover that a 24-year-old man was driving.
The police stated that the two vehicles subsequently crashed into a Suzuki sedan that had three individuals onboard.
According to the arrest report, the driver of the Suzuki died at Jackson Memorial Hospital, while the rear passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police reported that the Range Rover driver sustained minor injuries, while the other passenger was transported to JMH with facial and arm lacerations.
According to the report, a DUI toxicology test is still pending.
As of Monday afternoon, Lathers is still hospitalized in JMH’s Ward D, according to Miami-Dade jail records. Unfortunately, her mug shot is not available at this time, and her bond has not been set.
