A 42-year-old mother from Florida City, Shernice Gibbs, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly hitting her son with a broomstick, resulting in a serious wrist injury. The altercation reportedly arose from a disagreement over the boy wearing oversized pants as he was getting ready for school.
Emergency services, including a team from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, quickly responded to the scene to provide assistance. They promptly transported the injured boy to Homestead Hospital for immediate treatment. The severity of his injury prevented him from providing a written statement to the authorities, as his wrist was in pain and in poor condition.
According to Gibbs, the altercation started in the morning while she was assisting her children in preparing for school. She stated that her son started using offensive language and eventually resorted to physically attacking her by repeatedly punching her in the face. Gibbs informed the police officers that these strikes resulted in her face becoming swollen.
According to Gibbs, the situation took a turn for the worse when her son attempted to choke her by wrapping his hands around her neck. In self-defense, she scratched his face, causing a minor abrasion. Gibbs then confessed to using the broomstick to strike her son.
After examining the scene and gathering evidence, the police apprehended Gibbs on allegations of committing aggravated child abuse that caused significant physical harm. The gravity of the charges underscores the severity of the incident and the extent of harm inflicted on her son.
On the day of her arrest, a photo was taken of Gibbs, which did not show any visible signs of bruising or swelling on her face, contradicting her claims of being punched by her son. Gibbs is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with her bond yet to be set.
The Florida Department of Children and Families received notification about the incident, as per the standard protocol for cases involving child abuse. However, at the time the arrest report was filed, the department had not yet provided a response to the police regarding the situation.
