A woman from northwest Miami-Dade County was taken into custody on Tuesday following an incident where she allegedly assaulted a school employee. According to the police, the employee had removed her son from a school bus in early July, and the woman responded by punching and spitting on the employee.
Denita Chatelain, 33, has been charged with aggravated battery of a specified official or employee and disruption or interference of an educational institute, as stated in an arrest report by Miami-Dade Schools police.
On July 8, Chatelain trespassed onto the premises of Lillie C. Evans K-8 Center, situated at 1895 NW 75th St. in the Gladeview area. This incident occurred during the summer programs, and in front of students, parents, and fellow staff members, Chatelain confronted a staff member.
The police report stated that Chatelain used derogatory language towards the employee, calling her a derogatory term, and threatened to physically harm her for removing her son from the school bus.
According to investigators, Chatelain was instructed by a school police officer to wait outside while he tried to defuse the situation. However, she disregarded the instructions and went back to her home, which is located near the school.
Chatelain was later seen outside her home and was taken into custody without incident just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the police.
Chatelain confessed to the crime after being read her Miranda rights, according to the police. However, the exact details of her statement were redacted in the report that was made available to the public.
Chatelain is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Tuesday, with her bond yet to be determined.
