A man from Georgia who was wanted for attempted murder in Florida has been apprehended in Michigan, according to officials.
Malik J. McKenzie, a 29-year-old resident of Dallas, Georgia, has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary. He is the ex-boyfriend of one of the victims. The incident took place on August 19 at 3 a.m. when a Florida couple was shot inside their home. Thankfully, both victims managed to survive, as confirmed by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives were able to identify McKenzie as the masked man captured on video outside the home prior to the shooting after carefully reviewing the footage.
During their investigation, detectives came across an additional surveillance camera in the neighborhood. This camera captured footage of the suspect vehicle, a dark Nissan Altima. Interestingly, upon running the license plate, they discovered that it was assigned to a different car. Upon further inquiry, it was revealed that the license plate had been stolen from a van in Deltona on July 26.
According to detectives, the suspect captured on video outside the home matched the individual seen outside the shooting victims’ residence.
According to the sheriff’s office, the analysts at the Volusia County Crime Center (VC3) conducted a thorough investigation on License Plate Readers within the locality. Their primary objective was to locate Nissan Altimas that matched the description of the suspect vehicle.
Through their efforts, they successfully identified one vehicle with a Georgia license plate registered to McKenzie. The analysts then tracked the vehicle’s route throughout Volusia County, both with its Georgia license plate and its stolen Florida license plate. The vehicle was found to have made stops at a gas station and a McDonald’s, with McKenzie being clearly identifiable in the surveillance footage from each location.
Detectives were able to gather digital evidence that linked McKenzie directly to the shooting, in addition to the video footage they had obtained.
McKenzie’s vehicle was located and he was arrested by officers in Southfield, Michigan on Saturday, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by detectives.
McKenzie is currently being held in custody in Michigan, awaiting extradition to Volusia County.
