On Labor Day, workers in South Florida gathered together to demand higher wages in response to the increasing cost of living in the area. Union leaders took the opportunity to rally and advocate for better pay and improved working conditions.
Food workers at Fort Lauderdale airport have presented their employer, Delaware North, with a list of demands. They are asking for a minimum wage of $20 per hour and access to affordable health benefits. It is important to note that their contract expired approximately a month ago.
If their demands are not met, they have agreed to go on strike.
Wendi Walsh, principal officer of Unite Here Local 355, expressed concern about the potential closure of every food and beverage outlet in the terminal and the two adjacent terminals. She emphasized the desire to avoid such a scenario.
Monique Peterson, a bartender at Fort Lauderdale airport, reveals that her fellow workers are struggling to make ends meet, even with the help of tips.
According to Peterson, individuals are preparing meals that they cannot afford to consume.
CBS News Miami attempted to contact Delaware North multiple times, but has not received a response.
The AT&T workers’ strike continues in Miami Dade County, with Labor Day marking the 17th day of protest.
Byron Flores, a long-time technician with the company for 26 years, hasn’t received any payment since he left work slightly over two weeks ago. Currently, he is relying on a weekly payment of $300 from his union to make ends meet while they negotiate a new contract with AT&T.
Flores expressed his sadness for both the consumer and his team due to the circumstances. He emphasized the necessity of taking action, even if it meant temporarily being away from work.
The United Teachers of Dade organized a rally today, showing solidarity with other unions who are on strike during the holiday. According to teacher Crystal Etienne, her profession is not permitted to go on strike in Florida, so she expresses her support for those who are able to do so.
Etienne emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity, stating that we are all interconnected in this endeavor. He underlined the significance of unions, emphasizing that we are all part of the same family. Furthermore, he highlighted that fair wages play a crucial role in creating a better working environment.
AT&T stated their commitment to creating a contract that aligns with the current job market and ensures fair wages. In an effort to facilitate the contract negotiations, they have requested the presence of a federal mediator. The Communication Workers of America Union has taken their concerns about these negotiations to the National Labor Relations Board, filing a formal complaint.
