A Homestead man was taken into custody after authorities confirmed that he had fired 23 rounds from multiple firearms in a residential area early Sunday morning.
According to Homestead police, they received a call about gunfire in a residential area after the ShotSpotter system detected 23 shots fired. The specific location of the neighborhood was not disclosed in the arrest report that was made public.
Surveillance video footage revealed that Tony Darnell Evans, a 22-year-old suspect, was seen recklessly brandishing two semi-automatic firearms on the second floor of a building, according to investigators.
Evans was spotted by the police as he made his way down to the first floor. With two guns clearly visible in the front pockets of his pants, he approached the victim.
Investigators said that the video footage, captured on CCTV, showed Evans running into his apartment with both guns in hand.
Officers prepared photographic lineups, and both the victim and a witness positively identified Evans as the suspect involved in the incident. They provided sworn written statements to Homestead police, confirming their identification.
The Miami-Dade Police Department’s special response team carried out a search warrant at Evans’ residence, leading to his arrest, according to the report.
During the search of the residence, law enforcement officers discovered several firearms. These included four semi-automatic firearms, a .223 rifle, a 50-round drum, a 100-round drum, three .223 round magazines, a .223 bullet, nine 9mm bullets, two extended magazines, and four 9mm magazines. As part of their investigation, all of these items were seized as evidence.
According to the report, Evans was then brought to the Homestead Police Department for questioning but declined to cooperate with detectives.
According to jail records, he is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm or deadly weapon causing bodily harm and improper exhibition of a weapon or firearm.
Evans is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without a determined bond as of Tuesday.
