Andrys Garcia, who is 40 years old, stands accused of both leaving the scene of a fatal accident and tampering with evidence.
Around 1 a.m. last Monday in the unincorporated Tamiami area, a tragic incident occurred. Kevin Chaparro, an 18-year-old who had just finished watching a soccer match, was riding his bike along SW 127th Ave. and 32nd Ter. on his way home. Sadly, a car struck him from behind and killed him. Investigators are still piecing together the details of this heartbreaking accident.
A white Jeep Wrangler was believed to be the vehicle involved in the crash, as captured in a video from a nearby neighbor’s home.
Garcia, a Cuban national, contacted a Miami-Dade detective through his attorney, as police discovered during their investigation.
According to the arrest report, Garcia visited the Miami-Dade Police Department headquarters last Wednesday and made a confession in the presence of his attorney. He is currently being held on a $20,000 bond.
According to his family, Chaparro was a Colombian immigrant and an only child. He moved to South Florida to pursue his education and attend Millennia Atlantic University in Doral on a soccer scholarship.
The deceased’s parents are presently collecting funds to travel to Miami and take their son’s remains back to Colombia for a proper burial.
