Traffic in both directions came to a halt in New York State when a massive truck collided with an underpass. Interestingly, this railroad bridge has a notorious history of similar incidents. It was the same bridge that suffered three collisions in a single weekend towards the end of April.
It’s important to note that this particular bridge should not be mistaken for others that are frequently hit. For instance, the King Street bridge, where the Hutchinson turns into the Merritt Parkway or the Glenridge Road bridge in Glenville have both been hit multiple times in the past year.
Another Oversized Truck Strikes Syracuse Bridge
According to The Post Standard, a truck collided with a bridge on Park Street in Syracuse and got wedged underneath it. Officials state that the truck’s trailer suffered considerable damage upon impact with the bridge. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
According to WSYR, the bridge has a height label of 12’2″. The recent increase in accidents may be attributed to the closure of the I-81 ramp last year.

According to a report by WSYR, the closure of the I-81 ramp that leads to Onondaga Lake Parkway by the New York State Department of Transportation has resulted in increased traffic and more trucks being diverted toward Park Street.
The bridge in New York State that experiences the most collisions with vehicles is the one mentioned in this article.
However, regarding bearing the brunt of tractor-trailers, Park Street and Glenville do not hold the title for the state’s most affected areas.
The Greenwich Times reported that the King Street bridge, located on the border of Rye Brook, NY and Greenwich, CT, and where the Hutch transforms into the Merritt Parkway, holds the record for the most number of strikes among all the bridges in New York state.
According to a report by The Times in 2019, the bridge had been hit nearly 150 times in the last decade.
To prevent further accidents, authorities have implemented measures to increase safety on New York’s roads. One such measure involved placing additional warnings on the King Street bridge and on I-287 to alert truck drivers of height limitations. Despite these efforts, the state’s Department of Transportation and the Thruway Authority recently discovered that vehicles struck bridges in New York State at least 344 times in 2021.
