Gilber Caro, a Venezuelan politician with a history of being imprisoned for his political activities, is now facing charges related to a hit-and-run incident. According to records, the incident occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m. on Monday. Caro has been charged specifically with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

The arrest report states that Caro, who is 50 years old, was behind the wheel of a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, heading west on 8th Street towards Southwest 42nd Avenue. Meanwhile, the victim, operating a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, ran the red light.

According to the report, the Sonata crashed into a third vehicle and a palm tree.

According to the report, Caro left the scene on foot, leaving the victim and his vehicle behind. The report mentions that Caro did not offer any help or call for assistance before making his escape.

Caro reached out to the registered owner of the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving shortly after the crash, at approximately 7:00 a.m. He informed her about his involvement in the accident that occurred earlier that day, which involved her vehicle, as stated in the report.

Caro requested her to dial 911, resulting in his arrest at 9:20 a.m. Subsequently, he was then booked into jail.

According to the arrest report, Caro, a Venezuelan citizen, has an address in Miami.

Voluntad Popular, a Venezuelan political party, shared on their official social media account about his arrest.

“We have received information that Gilber Caro, a former political prisoner and elected deputy in 2015, has been involved in a traffic accident in the United States. He is currently in the custody of authorities in that country,” the post stated. “As this situation is still unfolding, we are waiting for further details regarding the case. We acknowledge that the United States upholds the rule of law and ensures due process to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will keep you updated on any developments in this matter.”
